A custom CSV-based tool that eliminated the manual work of updating Shopify metafields across thousands of product variants.
The problem
What needed to change
With 6,000+ product-variant combinations in the Shopify catalogue, updating metafield data manually was impractical. Every change required navigating the Shopify admin individually for each variant - a process that would have taken weeks and introduced significant risk of error.
The solution
What we built
We built a browser-based tool that accepts a CSV file, matches rows to Shopify variants via SKU, and pushes metafield updates in bulk through the Shopify API. The tool handles validation, error reporting, and progress tracking.
Technical detail
Browser-based JavaScript tool using the Shopify Admin API. CSV parsing with row-level validation. SKU-based variant matching. Rate-limit-aware batch processing. Error logging and summary reporting.
Outcome
Reported 30+ hours of manual work eliminated for the initial catalogue update.
